Bursa Uludağ and English team London Lions faced a scandalous situation in the FIBA Women’s European Cup play-off match. Bursa team applied for visas for 10 players and the technical team on December 1st. However, they were informed that visas would be issued within 15 days. Despite the club’s efforts to expedite the process, it was unsuccessful.
The team was threatened with a 40,000 Euro fine and a ban from the tournament if they did not take the field. As a result, only 5 people without visa issues were sent to England. With only 5 players, including 1 injured, Bursa Uludağ lost the match 122-63.
Club President Berk Aladağ expressed his disappointment at not being able to represent the country properly due to the visa issue. He mentioned that the team went to the match with a depleted squad as the visa process was delayed.
The technical team applied for visas for the rematch match on December 21st at the Istanbul England Consulate General on December 4th. However, they faced difficulties and were not able to obtain visas on time. They eventually managed to send 5 players to London to participate in the match.
President Berk Aladağ also mentioned that despite the intervention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the UK authorities did not prioritize their visa application, causing delays in the process.
